Mathieu Questel

Born in Rouen, France, Mathieu Questel is a French painter whose work has always been deeply connected to American culture. After a career in visual communication and digital creation, he devoted himself fully to oil painting. His early series, inspired by California and skateboard culture, explored memories of youth, freedom, and the passage of time. His work now turns to the American West, a world in which he continues this exploration through new figures, new landscapes, and a particular focus on the bonds between generations.

Artistic statement

Through his paintings, Mathieu Questel explores what we receive, what we learn, and what we pass on. The cowboy becomes the central figure in this narrative. He appears in scenes of work, learning, and everyday life, often alongside a child. A hand resting on a shoulder, a gesture being observed, a rope being learned to handle, or a silent presence become signs of a legacy built over time. The American West is not portrayed as a simple historical setting. It becomes a living world, shaped by gestures, family bonds, and knowledge passed down from one generation to the next. Working from images he composes and then translates into oil on canvas, Mathieu Questel creates scenes that feel both realistic and timeless. The light, colors, and textures of his paintings evoke the visual language of an earlier era, while the relationships between his figures give each scene its human dimension.

“After several years spent exploring the imagery of California and memories of youth, my work now turns to the American West. The cowboy becomes the central figure in a narrative about legacy and what is passed down. Through gestures, bonds, and moments of learning between adults and children, I explore what one generation passes on to the next.”
